FORTUNE Magazine Names Panera Bread(R) to ’100 Fastest-Growing Companies’ List

ST. LOUIS, MO, Aug 26, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) — FORTUNE magazine has named Panera Bread to its 2010 list of 100 Fastest-Growing Companies, a first for the Company. Panera is one of only two restaurant concepts to make the 2010 list.

“There aren’t many businesses with a successful track record for twenty-plus years that could still qualify as a fast grower, while at the same time being able to point to industry-best stock market performance over the last decade,” said Bill Moreton, Panera’s Chief Executive Officer and President. “Panera’s ability to continually defy the conventional growth curve suggests there remains a great deal of opportunity for the concept.”

To be eligible for the 100 Fastest-Growing Companies list, foreign or domestic companies had to meet certain key criteria: be trading on a major U.S. stock exchange; have a market capitalization of at least $250 million; have revenue and net income of at least $50 million and $10 million respectively for the four quarters ended on or before April 30, 2010; and have an annualized growth in revenue and earnings per share of at least 15% over the last three years on or before April 30, 2010.

Companies that met the criteria were then ranked by past three-year annual revenue growth rate, earnings per share (EPS) growth rate, and total return for the period ended June 30, 2010. A company’s overall standing on the list was based on the sum of these three ranks.

“Though our place on the FORTUNE ranking reflects certain financial milestones reached, it is also testament to Panera’s management, our franchisees, and our associates — all of whom are contributing to our growth through the belief that Panera is a special concept and an enduring consumer brand,” Moreton said.

The full list and related stories appear in the September 6, 2010 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands today, and at http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortunefastestgrowing/2010/index.html.

In addition to the FORTUNE Fastest-Growing ranking, Panera Bread this year has been named to BusinessWeek’s Top Customer Service Leaders list and was named ‘Most Popular’ large restaurant chain in the 2010 Zagat Fast-Food Survey.

I have been using a Panera Bread Card for my meals for over a year now. I just recently started using it as a business expense. Many lunches and meeting at Panera.

You many ask yourself, why should I create a Panera Card account?
When you create a Panera Card account, you can enjoy the convenience of setting your Panera Card to reload automatically when you want it to, recall your stored billing information for one-time reloads and manage the balances and reload preferences of each of the Panera Cards you have linked to your account. I do know that one time I either added money to the card or started a new card and I received that meal free. It was a nice return for being a loyal customer.

Now, I hear that Panera Bread is taking it a step further and offering a new rewards program called My Panera. Go to a Panera and register a new card.

After you register your card you will get some FREE stuff!

The FREE stuff includes:

* Special Birthday Bonus
* Surprise Gifts and Special Offers
* FREE Samples
* Invites to Special Events and more

Please check with participating Panera Bread Locations. Do understand that some are corporate owned and some are franchises. So you need to see if they offer the same deals all the time.

I don’t know what it is but the whole grain bread at Panera is GREAT, but you have to be careful. I think some Panera’s OVERCOOK the bread. The top part where it makes that indentation has sharp edges. I have cut my mouth 3 times in the last two weeks.

Its not a bid deal but I go to alot of different Panera’s throughout New York and when I am away on business in Westchester, Colorado and California and sometimes in Texas.

I noticed that the Strawberry Poppy seed and Chicken Salad was back recently at Panera Bread. Something was different though. There was the wording, “Signature Premium YP2 Up charge” and an additional price of $1.40 for the You Pick Two combination when getting either the Strawberry Poppyseed and Chicken Salad or the Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil. One question, why?

Can they really justify this? The Strawberry Poppyseed and Chicken Salad is already the most expensive salad(atleast here in NY) at $8.99. The Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil is $1.00 less but they quickly get it back when you “Pick Two”.

Now, I am not one to really complain. But about a year ago they started to “slim” down on the salads. I actually asked, “what happened to my salad”. I didn’t care for the response. But the end result is that they made me a new larger salad. So I was happy.

If someone can explain to me why they are adding charges now, I would love to hear why?

Oh, is the word “signature” is supposed to win us over? There is nothing signature about it. I don’t care how many marketing brainiacs you put into the Panera Think tank. The consumer is not stupid.

I have been to this location on more than one occasion. I have sat in the booth across from the pickup counter and they do not have a partition high enough separating the booth from the service counter. More than once have I sat there while someone waited to get their order with their hair almost draped over the half partition and into the area where I was eating.

I would like to see this taken care of. I am a frequent diner at many different Panera Bread locations.

Panera Bread announced Wednesday that it will become the first national restaurant chain to voluntarily post the calorie information for its menu items at all 585 of its company-owned locations.

One study by food industry consulting group Technomic, which surveyed 755 people living in the New York City boroughs, found that 82 percent of respondents said the listings impacted what they ordered at restaurants.

“Generally Americans are looking for flavor and taste and quality,” he said, adding that it’s more about how many pounds per dollar one can get. “You don’t go out to a restaurant to know what kind of calorie count is in your food.”

One important part of this equation that is not shown is that Panera portion control is just as important as the calorie count. Our base meal size is usually 3 times larger than it should be. Why do you think that Weight Watchers is so successful with its followers. Its not so much about calories as it is about smaller portions therefore alerting you to the problem. Calories are usually too high because portion size it to large. Panera showing calorie count is a great thing.

I have come across more than a few people that have never been to Panera Bread. I am always touting it. I am a Panera Bread disciple

Let's Meet At Panera

I have come to learn that there are two types of Panera Business. Franchise and Corporate.

I was at a Panera one day in Scarsdale, NY. I often get a Panera Card and use that to pay. I was accustomed to getting a receipt for my meal as well as a receipt for my card balance. Much to my surprise, when I asked for a receipt balance on the card I was told by the manager. “We don’t give receipts for the card balance”. I said, I usually get a receipt, to which he replied, “we are corporate, we don’t give receipts”.

Ok, so I need to see what the deal is with that. In this day and age, “we don’t give receipts because we are corporate” doesn’t make much sense. The technology is there, why not?

347 Panera Bread

Just tried it out today. It is a pseudo railroad type layout. what I mean by that is that you enter in the middle of the railroad so to speak. It is partitioned in such a way that you can carve out a little corner for a romantic rendezvous or for a one on one business meeting. I actually had a business meeting there today.

Panera tries to be anti-mass. While this won’t last for ever. You can certainly go big and still be small. Cater to the customers with specialty orders. I don’t believe that will change.

No one gives you a dirty look for overstaying your welcome. And the food’s made with ingredients that are actually good for you, such as the antibiotic-free chicken.

Even though Panera is a national chain and expanding rather rapidly. I believe they will never be a McDonald’s. And I mean that in a good way. Their customization approach to creating your order as you wait is not assembly line like other fast food chains. Panera is just fast service. There is a difference.

A few years back Panera was the runner up for “Customer First” accolades. Second, only to NetFlix.
